AWL, Inc. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), a Hokkaido University-certified startup and the market leader in edge AI camera solutions, is pleased to announce that the Company has entered into the second Joint Research Agreement with faculties of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), for the further development of a wide range of AI technologies, including image processing technology, which is the Company’s strength. Additionally, AWL signed an MoU with IITB Research Park Foundation (IITBRPF), and is the second Japanese company to become a member of the Park.

During the signing ceremony, Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay said,

IIT Bombay is a premier technical institute of India and is a leader in the field of engineering education and research. The Institute was granted the status of ‘Institution of Eminence’ by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in 2018.
In 2020, AWL welcomed Prof. Biplab Banerjee, an Assistant Professor at IITB, as a Technical Advisor. While deepening active discussions remotely, AWL has accelerated the development of more sophisticated AI technology and its practical application. The activity was featured in a report by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).

The collaboration with IIT Bombay’s Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering (CSRE) and Center of Machine Intelligence & Data Science (C-MInDS) has resulted in numerous achievements in the field of image recognition. Furthermore, AWL has been recruiting full-time employees from IITB and giving internships to about ten students every year.

■IITB Research Park

The IITBRPF is a single window within IIT Bombay through which industry and academia can interact in an environment where academic research complements technology development and productization to impact businesses and the society. The Research Park is building an infrastructure of about 500,000 square feet, to be operational in 2023, and will house R&D labs and units of both large corporations and Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). AWL intends to set up an R&D unit at the Research Park to strengthen its R&D in cutting-edge AI technology and accelerate its social implementation.
